Introduction
Daily Supported Reading (DSR) is an internationally acclaimed approach to the teaching of early reading in KS1 (and for low readers in KS2). Primarily a whole class programme in year 1 and the end of reception, it has proven success as a small group or 1-1 catch up intervention.
The programme is finely attuned to ensure children become fluent readers who are independently motivated. Children:
- read stories on their own right from the start
- learn to respond to and engage with new ideas and information (cultural capital)
- are taught how to access information with increasing autonomy
- learn to problem solve independently while keeping a story or message in mind (global comprehension)
DSR provides a systematic approach to the training and development of all staff who are working to ensure that no child gets left behind. It is implemented in addition to a school's synthetic phonics programme.
What's included?
This classroom programme is delivered initially to Year 1, then introduced into Reception and for the lowest attaining children in Year 2 for maximum impact across the school.
Children enjoy daily independent reading in small groups matched to their independent reading level, led by a trained adult.
Adults use differentiated lesson guides to move children on and make sound judgements about when to do so.
The programme includes:
- a half-day training session for all staff who will be working with children (or whole-school training)
- one training session for the Project Co-ordinator to support implementation and a follow up review session
- programme materials to structure independent sessions with daily reading groups
- access to termly forums and electronic resources and materials
What our customers think
"14 schools who were part of an independent two year evaluation of DSR from 2013–2015, and who implemented the programme as designed, achieved their highest outcomes ever for children achieving level 2b plus. The average increase in reading outcomes across this cohort was 11.3%."
