Overview
This 10-week termly project provides a brief history and cultural background to carnival music through a practical hands-on approach. Working with a maximum of 30 participants, sessions will include movement, body rhythms and, where school facilities allow, audio and visual examples.
Using Bateria instruments, styles covered will include one or two of the following: Samba, Samba Reggae (Brazil); Conga de Comparsa (Cuba); Candombe (Uruguay); Fe’ (Guinea); or London Urban beats and other fusions.
One hour per group is provided over a 10-week term, leading to a performance at the end of the residency. Open to all year groups in primary and secondary school
What's included?
- Instruments and all necessary equipment (including ear defenders) are provided as part of the programme.
- Whole class Carnival percussion and ensemble with differentiated parts for mixed ability groups.
- Opportunity for group to perform at the end of the programme.

This service provides schools with a unique opportunity to introduce Carnival instruments and music with a specialist tutor. It opens the door for new cultural education and learning experiences for children and develops children’s performance skills, confidence and ability to collaborate with others.
Our Music Service is responsive and flexible, with talented teachers and partnerships with world-class national, regional and local ensembles, organisations and groups. We offer advice and guidance on curriculum music and development, as well as support in monitoring progress in music for all. The service also provides opportunities to nurture and develop young musical talent through frequent major performances in public venues. All our music tutors are DBS checked and quality assured.
