Supporting your struggling readers in secondary schools
The Literacy Intervention Toolkit (LIT) is an extraordinarily effective teaching programme. It employs evidence based strategies proven to increase progress in English and the wider curriculum for the lowest achieving students in year 7, with most making an astonishing 3-4 years of progress in a single year.
The programme’s unique and highly collaborative method of reciprocal teaching enables students to check that they understand the content of what they are reading, make inferences based on what they have read and improve their extended writing skills.
Introducing the LIT Programme into your school will boost your students’ reading comprehension, thinking and learning skills. It will strengthen their confidence so that they can work with greater independence.
The programme’s strategies can be employed across the school to develop all your pupils’ literacy skills. Training is available for teachers and teaching assistants from all subjects. Implementation support throughout the year ensures that the programme is introduced effectively in your school with networking opportunities and new staff training sessions.
The LIT Programme is a ground-breaking group intervention that will rapidly accelerate literacy and attainment ensuring that no pupil is left behind.

What our customers think
"Absolutely amazing! The LIT programme is an intervention that has been truly instrumental in improving the levels of literacy for students in Year 7 at Ashfield School... the largest secondary in the country."
Sam Henstock, Coordinator of the LIT Programme, Ashfield School, Nottinghamshire
"The LIT Programme has been very effective for students at Winchmore. They have grown in confidence in their reading and writing skills. They are engaged in the lessons and the small group setting works well for the majority of the students. The resources provided are excellent. The teaching plans are very useful and the layout of the lessons in the Pupil Booklets are easy to follow. Unit 1 Spooky Stories are always the students' favourite unit!"
Asha Lutchmun, Access Arrangements Coordinator and SEND Literacy Coordinator, Winchmore School, Enfield
"Before the LIT programme, literacy lessons were fairly adhoc with little or no focus. With the Hackney resources, we've been able to embed a programme that seems to be growing in success. Pupils now see Literacy on their timetable as a specific subject to be proud of. We now have pupils asking to take Literacy which never happened in the past. Last year's Year 8 Hackney students are moving on to complete Entry Level Certificate in their Literacy lessons, which I think they are more than ready for as a result of their learning from the Hackney programme."
Kathryn Maunder-Hand, KS3 coordinator in English and Literacy Lead, Langtree School, Reading
